FAVOR

fellowshipchicagologo

Recently, at church, we have been studying the FAVOR of God based on the story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50) while also studying Psalm 5:12(NIV) which states,“Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your FAVOR as with a shield.”

I want to invite you to pray a prayer that we have been sharing. Pray today for the FAVOR of God to be on you, around you, working in you, working through you and working for you! In Jesus’ name!

With all this FAVOR talk, You may be asking , “What is FAVOR, anyway?”

Here’s a concise poetic definition!

What is FAVOR?

FAVOR can be defined as double grace.
It can give you an uncommon blessing in an uncommon place.

FAVOR is a garment that can be worn like a suit,
It can allow you to minister and bear much fruit.

FAVOR causes blessings to be pulled toward you like a magnet.
It grants sweatless victories and won’t let you be stagnant.

FAVOR opens doors that no one can shut!
It can even make you speechless and make others say, “Whaaaat?”

FAVOR is divine help that no man can halt.
It is more priceless than anything protected by a vault.

FAVOR isn’t earned, deserved, nor fair.
It works like an elevator, when others must take the stairs.

FAVOR is a force that cannot be explained.
Thank God that this flow cannot be contained.

FAVOR isn’t temporal, but it is forever.
And it will become evident on your every endeavor!

A Time to Sing

IMG_8880

I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I was raised with the rule, ‘no singing at the table.’ I must say that this is a hard rule to follow in a musical (and LOUD) family!

Last year, in November of 2013, while sitting at the dining room table, the aforementioned rule went out of the window when my husband begin to write and sing a song we now call ‘WAR!’

By that Sunday last year in November, we were singing the song in church. Just a few months later, this February, we were recording it as a church.

I want to take the time to post the lyrics of this song, because I don’t know anyone, who has not
dealt with some form of war in their lives; whether it is an attack on their family, on their faith or on their focus on the Father.

I am extremely excited that more will hear this song and be encouraged by it…I also want you to know that sometimes it’s alright to sing at the table!

WAR

“I got joy in my soul,
God is in control.
I got Satan on my trail,
But I’m singing all is well.
He’s attacking everyday,
But I’m watching while I pray.
No matter the attack, I won’t turn back.

‘Cause this means WAR!

I’ve been in the storm and the rain, But the blood still stays the same. Whatever’s going wrong,
my war clothes are on!
I might be in a daze, but you can’t have my praise. No matter the attack, I won’t turn back.

‘Cause This means WAR!

I plead, I plead the blood!

You can’t have my family!
You can’t have my increase!
You can’t have my breakthrough!

‘Cause this means ‘WAR’

Are You Producing A Boring Show?

IMG_0938Each year, the television industry goes through a seasonal process of cancelling and renewing shows. This process is guided by a rating system that studies demographics, viewership and reach. A show is usually cancelled when the ratings do not match the expectations of the network, no matter how many or few seasons the show has been on the air.

If God had a network that operated according to this type of process, would your worship service match HIS expectations? What kind of ratings would you get from God regarding your demographics, viewership and reach? Could God be too creative of a Creator to expect the same show on the same channel every weekend of every year? Would your worship service be cancelled and ‘dropped’ or renewed for another season? Would you need to make some cast, content or creative changes to live up to His expectations for His network?

We all serve the same creative Creator! He is so creative that there are no two people on earth with the same fingerprints or footprints. Not even identical twins have the same exact DNA or personalities. We all have different images, voices and capabilities.

“In the beginning, God created…” Genesis 1:1

According to a study published by the University of California’s Museum of Paleontology, there are 250,000 described species of plants, 12,000 described species of roundworms, 4,000 described species of mammals and over 350,000 species of beetles described, with many believing that there are more beetles yet to be discovered!

Psalm 104: 24-25 says, “How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number-living things both large and small.”

As God made so much and so many so distinctively different, it just seems that sameness could bore Him as the Chief Creative Officer of the Universe. The word ‘create’ is a verb that means to cause to come into existence or to produce through artistic and imaginative effort. The word ‘creative’ is an adjective defined as having the ability or power to produce characterized by originality and expressiveness.

Through these definitions, it is evident that God created us (brought us into existence) to be creative (produce originality).

Moreover, the word of God encourages us to be creatively renewed. Multiple times, there is a request for new music, a new song and a new sound.

Psalm 40:3 says, “He put a new song in my mouth…”
Psalm 96:1 says, “Sing unto the Lord a new song.”
Isaiah 42:10 says, ” Sing a new song to the Lord.”
Throughout God’s creation, we witness His desire for a multiplicity of sounds. After all, it is Him who decided the dog would bark, the cow would moo, the cat would meow and the owl would ask, “who?”

Could a God so creative expect there to be only one kind of worshipper? Could a God so creative expect there to be only one style of teaching or preaching in our churches? Could a God so creative be pleased with the predictability of our annual church calendar events year after year? Could a God who integrates the diverse living things He created, expect us to separate and segregate our styles to appease one proposed appetite or preference at a time?

God has commanded us to be imitators of HIM, not each other! (Ephesians 5:1)
Author John Mason said, “You were born and original. Don’t die a copy.”

Understanding that we serve an omnipresent God, we know that God is present at all of our worship services, but in His perfect attendance, could a God who created so many different beings be bored with the same show?

Birthday SALE-A-BRATIONS!

Mommy Tower

I’m Singing….SALE-A-BRATION Time COME ON!

When my oldest child’s first birthday rolled around, I thought that bigger meant better! We rented out one side of an indoor recreational play facility, invited all the children in our lives and spent way too much money! I have never seen so much pizza in my life then or since… Now that I think about it, her biggest party is one that she doesn’t even remember. Birthday celebrations can put a dent in your monthly budget before you know it. However, it’s important to step back and assess, who is this party for? The Children or The Parents? Moreover, what monster am I creating? You do know that in 12 months you will find yourself trying to outdo last year’s event. Also, if you have more than one child, like we do, there’s also the dynamic that the kids are ‘keeping score.’ What’s most important is to create meaningful memories that your child feels that they are a part of…even in the planning stages. The funnest celebrations we’ve had have been at home with our family, friends and extended family. We ask our kids, what theme do you want? It challenges them to be creative. They feel empowered and are proud of the event. One year Princess, who’s now nine, said, “I want a Venus and Serena Party!” We bought her a tennis outfit and printed out pictures that were online of Venus and Serena, color coordinated plates and balloons and it was fabulous fun. We took two large candle holders we owned, taped a long span of paper towels between them and created a mini indoor tennis court in our living room. We used real tennis rackets and balloons as the tennis ball(so nothing would get broken;). My youngest girl, Paris, who’s now seven, wanted a Michael Jackson party. We all had a white glove and did a craft project of putting glitter all over our white glove. After that, we all danced and watched the movie ‘This is It!’ with our one white glove on. It didn’t cost alot, but it was UNforgettable! It’s not in the money you shell out, it’s in the meaning you put in!

Invest collective creativity on birthdays and save the big bucks for their college days!

Are YOU Working??

Purpose“Are you working?” is a question that is often asked when
someone wants to know whether or not a person currently has a paying job or
not. However, today I want you to ponder this question as a reflection of
whether or not you are functioning and flowing in the purpose and plan for
which you were created.

Think about this…If you flip up the light switch and the
light bulb burns out, it is then no longer working. If you get in your car and
it will not start, that car is not working. If a vending machine takes your
quarters, dimes and dollars; but does not give you back your soda or snack, the
machine is not working!

When anything we encounter is not doing exactly what we
bought it to do or what we expect it to do, we get frustrated because it is not
working. Well, are you frustrating God by not doing exactly what He intended
you to do when He created you? Are you working according to what He had in mind
for your life?

John 9:4 says, “I must work the works of Him who sent me
while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” Take time today to
ask yourself, “Whose work have I been working?”

If you’ve been working your own works and creating your own
to-do list, ask God to shake everything off of your list that does not line up
with His list. No matter how old you are, or how many years you’ve had the same
new year’s resolution, it’s never too late to start following God’s agenda for
your life. Work the works of Him!

While ‘working’ can be defined as being actively engaged in
paid work; ‘working’ is moreover defined as performing an intended purpose.
You’ve been given a unique combination of gifts, talents and abilities along
with a one-of-a-kind personality. This combination was not by accident, but
everything that you have within you, as well as everything that you have
experienced, was for God’s purposes! Romans 8:28 states, “And we know that in
all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called
according to his purpose.”

Perhaps you have been unclear about your purpose. Trace your
passions and pet peeves and they will lead you to your purpose. Purpose is
often attached to your ability to provide a solution to problems and issues
that prick your heart. The abused become advocates. Former victims help others
gain victory. Those once chained become champions for a cause.

Take time to do an honest evaluation of whether or not you
are or have been working. If you realize that you are not functioning in the
role God intended for you, this is the season to start aligning your life with
God’s perfect will!
You are a rarity. Now pray for God to give you clarity about
how He wants to use your rarity.

Allow God to use you during this season of your life, then
when you are asked, “Are you working?” the answer will be obvious. Now is the
moment. This is the year! 2010 is the perfect time to start working.
